How Does the Porsche PDK Transmission Work?

The Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission was designed in the 1980s for motorsports and was so successful that it's now a staple throughout the Porsche lineup. Where Porsche really innovated with the PDK is making it essentially two gearboxes in one. Hydraulically-actuated wet-clutch packs lubricate the transmission parts and alternate power from the engine via two separate driveshafts, depending on the gear selected. The upshot is that gear changes are almost unnoticeable, and thanks to the wet clutches, the transmission can last for an exceptionally long time.

Lakewood drivers can choose a PDK with up to eight gears, with seven gears available. On seven-geared PDK models, the sixth gear optimizes speed, while the seventh delivers better fuel economy.
